Yet, ironically, these problems are caused by human activity and can be mitigated with an improved understanding of cause-and-effect relationships. Preventing even one person from improperly putting fertilizers, pesticides, or contaminants down a storm drain can help protect the environment.
This is why the Organization for the Assabet River (OAR) runs workshops for schoolchildren in Acton, Boxborough, Concord, Hudson, Marlborough, Maynard, Stow, and Westborough. These summer programs offer hands-on environmental education that shows kids what they can do now and in the future to protect our environment. A 2007 grant from the Foundation for MetroWest allowed OAR to accommodate more children in its workshops, where they learn important lessons about preservation and sustainability.
