Foundation for MetroWest announced today that members of the Youth Action Council distributed $8,700 in grants to area organizations at a presentation held on May 26th at the Garden in the Woods. The Youth Action Council is comprised of sixteen youth from around the MetroWest region and is part of the Foundation’s Youth in Philanthropy Program. This year Youth in Philanthropy has distributed over $60,100 to organizations throughout the MetroWest.

“Youth in Philanthropy empowers youth to make a direct philanthropic impact in their community,” said Judith Salerno, executive director of the Foundation for MetroWest. “Through the program they learn valuable skills that will lay the groundwork for sustaining our communities in the future.”

The Youth Action Council reviewed grant proposals, conducted site visits, and made final decisions on grant distributions. Grant recipients include the Decibels Foundation ($3,600), Boys & Girls Club of Assabet Valley ($2,600), and Camp Starfish ($2,500).

Youth in Philanthropy is a hands-on, semester-long program that teaches school students the fundamentals of grant making, giving back to the community, and the nonprofit world. Since 2006, Youth in Philanthropy has granted over $300K to area organizations. Facilitated and funded by the Foundation for MetroWest the program partners with area schools to organize and execute the program.
