Our Environment

We believe in building and supporting healthy communities. A healthy community has good schools, safe neighborhoods, strong public services and most critically, a sound environment.

Our 2011 Grantees are:

To fund the continuance of the 37-acre restoration effort along with continuing education and environmental programs. This includes additional weed removal, trail maintenance, and a yearly educational symposium. Volunteer efforts and partnerships are key to accomplishing this work. To learn more, visit: www.lcwcs.org

To fund the construction of two recycled plastic lumber platforms for wetland science programs at the fragile Ice Pond, and to purchase field equipment for educational programs at the site. Improved access will enable projects at the water’s edge with minimal impact to the environment. To learn more, visit: www.massaudubon.org/drumlinfarm

To fund efforts for Westwood to meet the following EPA MS4 requirements: submittal within 6 months of a "Notice of Intent," outlining the stormwater management actions it will take over the next seven years; incorporation into its bylaws of the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection's stormwater standards; and distribution of two educational messages to each of 4 audiences (residential, commercial, industrial, construction). To go toward establishing a small in-house spay/neuter clinic for cats. An average of 500 cats/year was treated at the shelter in previous years. The clinic will provide affordable cat sterilization services to lower-income pet owners and owners at risk for relinquishing or abandoning their pets. To learn more, visit: www.medfieldshelter.com

Ken Vona, Chair of the Foundation Board, joins Meg Ramsey, Chair of the Grant Distribution Committee, in presenting the grant check to Jan Tarlow, Treasurer of the Medfield Animal Shelter.

To go towards the expenses associated with seeking accreditation with the Land Trust Alliance, an organization spearheading the development and implementation of land protection standards and practices. Accreditation should enhance the organization’s performance and keep them on the leading edge of excellence and innovation. To learn more, visit: www.svtweb.org

Massachusetts continues to have a wonderful network of green corridors, a mix of towns and open spaces that remind us of our roots in the New England village. Yet in MetroWest, many of our towns are dealing with issues such as suburban sprawl, land preservation, invasive species, water safety, and of course climate change. We’re committed to helping protect and preserve our environment, especially as our citizens embrace the concepts of a green economy and smart growth.
